I can remember picking this up from a second-hand bookshop in Twickenham. Just a couple of pounds. I had no idea this edition even existed, and couldn’t believe how beautiful it was.
This one is missing the original box though. I later found another copy with the original box.
The font I've used for all the headings on this site is called Tolkienesque New and is inspired by the calligraphy of J.R.R.Tolkien himself. It has an extended character set and looks lovely even at very small sizes. You can find it, and my other Tolkien fonts, here.

Sorry, but I don't offer valuations. If you own this item yourself, and want to find out what it's worth, then the best advice I can give is to check eBay completed items to see if one similar has been sold recently.

I have a copy of this book, pristine condition including the box, which has some wear on the corners.
I have a 1972 second impression of this beauty, still in its original slipcase, which I got as a 21st birthday present. The book remains in virgin condition, but the slipcase (which is of remarkably lightweight construction considering the quality of the book itself) is a bit chipped on several edges. The most amazing thing about the product is the ethereal weight of the paper – it’s the thinnest I’ve ever seen used on a book, and must have been a real bugger to print on!
I have a mint condition copy of 1978 with original box, wrapped in frosted glass interleave paper in a wooden box which I stained in Walnut then clear varnished then put on brass hinges and clasp with a brass plate on the box stating “Lord of the Rings, 1978 Deluxe Edition”.
