Tolkien Fonts

The font I've used for all the headings on this site is called Tolkienesque New and is inspired by the calligraphy of J.R.R.Tolkien himself. It has an extended character set and looks lovely even at very small sizes. You can find it, and my other Tolkien fonts, here.

Sorry, but I don't offer valuations. If you own this item yourself, and want to find out what it's worth, then the best advice I can give is to check eBay completed items to see if one similar has been sold recently.

    Hey,

I just purchased this poster from a collector. It’s the same poster, from Athena International, London, 1976 by Jimmy Cauton and printed in England, number 20/6560 from Allen & Unwin LTD. Do you know how many worth this poster is? You can e-mail me if you can say that. Thanks a lot.

In 1978 I purchased this poster, it is burnt around the edges and has been varnished onto a wood frame, I am interested if it was made like this or did someone do this and resold it, and of course is there any value. I love this piece and get alot of comments on it. Any info wood be great everything I can find says the one I have came out it the late 80’s but I got this one 78 or 79 (it is a funny story how I came across it )
      Thank you
      Linda

      • Roberta T says:

Poster should not have been varnished onto wood or burned edges. It depreciates the value if it is an original. It should be a thicker poster, w/o much of a papery feel to it. You will find the date on the edge. In immaculate shape it could be worth $300. Mine has some wear and a crease and is worth about $225.

I have a folding greeting card with the J. Cauty poster/image on the front, that my sister sent to me from London back in 1981 (I had the same poster, but it is long gone). I have searched and only found the poster. Do you know if any of these greeting cards still exist? It was from Athena International, London, Printed in England, No. 756560. Thanks, David

It is identic at your one and it’s the first time that i see one in all this year.Do you thnk that it can have also an economic value. I don’t want absolutely to sell it, but I’m interested to give more information to this particular work of Jimmy Cauty.
    Thank you.

hey, I have this poster on a wooden plaque measuring 12″x8″. Is it worth anything? it has Athena International sticker on the back…:)

  5. Max Bantleman says:

    Hi there,
I’ve heard that Jimmy Cauty also did a ‘Hobbit’ poster, I don’t suppose you know if this is true, or if you’ve seen / got an image?
    I’m intrigued 🙂
    Thanks!

  6. diego says:

  7. Abbie-Mae says:

is it 4 sale by any chance because my dad has 1 like it but it is worn out and i want a new 1 ty xx and how mutch would it be ty agen

  8. Jon Merriott says:

I’ve got the poster and it seems I’m lucky to have it! I’ve had a check around the net and found that All-posters have a few smaller ones that are reasonably priced but the large ones go for a couple of hundred pounds. Can’t find the Hobbit one at all so I suspect that would be stupid money. Cauty did these when he was only 17 and also did the cover for an LP of ‘The king of Elflands Daughter’ which featured Christopher Lee narating parts of the text. Cauty went on to help found the KLF which took the UK music scene by storm before him and his partner burnt all their money to show their disdane for the industry. He now seems to have gone back to making visual art.

  9. Brian says:

    Hi,
I have a a 33″x 22″ picture of the Jimmy Cauty lord of the rings, that seems to be stuck on a dark wood or hardboard backing 3/8″ thick and coated with some sort of protective finish. I have had it for over 20years I do not know if it is a print or a poster can anyone advise and is it of any value? not that I would sell it but I have not put it on my insurance as when I bought it all that time ago it was first reduced to £56 and then further to £28 which is what I paid for it.

  10. Peter says:

I had this poster full size, wooden back with a diamond in the staff. I loaned it to Brian G, Portland Oregon, almost 20 years ago. Does anyone have any information that would lead me back to my poster

    • Joslyn says:

      Peter,

I believe I purchased your poster today in Bend, Oregon! It has a diamond in the staff, please email me if you are still interested in finding it.

  11. Mike says:

    Hey Peter,
Best of luck – maybe someone will see your note here and can persuade Brian G to do the decent thing…

  12. Liddy says:

  17. Josh says:

  18. john roach says:

I have a beautiful framed poster behind none reflective glass of The lord of the rings poster by Jimmy Cauty. that we bought down in cornwall In the late 70s, from a shop called the dragons breath it was a bit of a hippy shop and it was pined up behind a door that went up above the shop after pleading with the owner to buy it he reluctantly said we could have it as my late wife loved it so much. we put it in the wardrobe for a few years untill I decided to surprise her and have it framed I would love to pass it on to someone who would enjoy it and give me a fair price as I know and care nothing about it eccept that many collectors would like to own one of the same.so contact me on face book or email [email protected]

    • Roberta T says:

I’ve had mine 38 years. It’s an original and the paper is heavier, like vellum. They had reprinted this poster many times.

  19. Chris says:

Be careful buying these posters I have what’s supposed to be original and it’s 30/6560 and every other poster I’ve seen up for sale is the same print number can anyone explain this or are they fakes?

  20. Bebe says:

Was given one of these as a gift by Sister in 70’s – later on a roommate stole it! Would love to get a replacement! Anyone know where I might look – this was a treasured gift and I loved the art work…

  21. Roberta T says:

I love this website. I researched this poster 3 years ago, after finally getting my original out and into a poster frame. It is beautiful. And I love all the questions and comments on here. 15-16 years ago, a friends son got me 4 small lotr posters that were on display at a store. I just got them framed as well. Love my lotr wall.

  22. Roy Teather says:

I have an old canvas print of this poster. It appears to be a silkscreen (?) printed on canvas that I’ve had for at least 35 years. Could anyone be able to tell me anything about it?

    • Fast Eddy says:

I have the exact same print on canvas. My late father got it in England in the late 70’s early 80’s. I believe it is just the poster glued to canvas. Someone wrote on the back of mine ” DON’T GO NEAR” “PIPPIN”. The edges are painted black but the print details are still visible international London• Jimmy Cauty• Lord of the rings – Et cetera. I think the original posters were thick and felt almost like a screening or lithograph. There are a few different versions of the print from my research. Not sure what one mine is probably a later one. Probably not worth much though anyway.

  23. Mark says:

My brother got this poster when he went to see Ralph Bakshi’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ in the cinema, back in 1978. He was 15 at the time and I was 7.
I remember it hanging in his room and always loved it.
He gave it to me and it was on my wall in my room when he left home. I kept is with me all the time and moved to London when I was 19. I had it on the wall in various flats and then moved in with a partner, back in 1999. She had a 15 year old son and I put the poster on his wall.
One day he decided to smash his room up, along with stuff I’d given him. He ripped my poster to pieces. He was having a fight with him mother. That poster, then was, well 22 years old and been everywhere. I was gutted.

  24. Scott Gaynes says:

Found this poster at a thrift store, still in original wrap and never opened. It’s from Spencer Gifts and cost $3.00 per the price tag. Whats it worth in 2021 and where’s the best place to auction it? Thanks!

  25. John glass says:

I have this poster on dark mahogany board. Behind laquer finish it measures 39 inches long by 26 inch wide. I have had it for twenty years it has the diamond in the staff also . anybody know the value and is anybody interested in it

  26. Sarah Fuszard says:

Hi I have a Lord of the rings poster but mines on wood which was purchased from Athena shop. I’ve had it for over 30years and my aunt was the original owner. Would anyone know what the value would be its still in very good condition

  27. Riley Webb says:

I have a poster On wood and laquered

  28. Tomra Abelar says:

I have (I believe) an original LOTR featuring Gandalph, printed in Switzerland. I have had it since the late 80’s. The original plastic is hanging on with sheer will, yet I have been afraid to try and repair it, not knowing what it really was. My question is, should I repair or replace? It has been my favorite piece for so many years! Also where might I find it’s mate, the Hobbit by same artist? Thanks so much in advance.

  29. Chris Strange says:

I have one on wood that is lacquered or polyurethaned, also has diamond in the staff. It is also thicker poster.I realized this after it survived a house fire and one of the corners got a little to hot. I purchased it from a friend who was a little down on his luck and strapped for cash. He had purchased at a shop in Nashville, Tenn.I believe he said he paid 300.00 for it. Don’t know that to be the truth or not. That was probably 23 years ago.If anyone knows a value pass it on please.
